Willow for the garden

Daisy Askins

I've been using the freshly harvested green willow from the Ironbridge Community Willow Bed to make plaited living willow trees and plant supports for the garden. These will be available at my next Open Studio on Saturday 22nd February, or you can email me to pre-order one. 10% of all sales will be donated to the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust to support the conservation of the Ironbridge Gorge.

Plaited living willow trees, £40

These plaited living willow trees, otherwise known as harlequin trees, add great sculptural interest to a garden. They should be positioned somewhere sunny and kept well watered and fed. They will need to be transplanted to a larger pot or planted in the ground within a year.

During the growing season, new growth will appear along and at the top of each of the rods. Regularly pull of any new growth from the trunk of the tree, but leave the growth at the top to form the canopy. You can cut the canopy growth back to the main trunk in the winter.

Plant supports, £50

5ft-6ft tall willow obelisks which can be used for growing climbing plants up. These obelisks generally have a 3-5 year lifespan. You can make them last longer by applying an annual light spray of 50:50 mix of boiled linseed oil and white spirit. They'll also last longer if you bring them inside in the winter. I like to put fairy lights on mine and use it as an alternative Christmas tree.
